Union County Information
Union County, with 41,624 residents, lies in the heart of Pennsylvania. Stretching from the Bald Eagle Mountains, which divide Union County from Lycoming County, to the junction of the East and West Branches of the Susquehanna River, Union County features a blend of communities, woodlands, farmlands, and many streams. Its 317 square miles feature mountainous ridge-and-valley terrain, and include Buffalo, Paddy, and Nittany Mountains. Major waterways in Union County include Penn’s, Buffalo, and White Deer Creeks.

Union County was created on March 22, 1813 from part of Northumberland County. The county seat, Lewisburg, is a focal point for visitors. A showcase of Federal and Victorian architecture, Lewisburg has more than 600 original 19th Century buildings in its historic district. Lewisburg also is home to Bucknell University, which was founded as the University of Lewisburg in 1846. Parklands in Union County include Bald Eagle State Forest and Shikellamy, Sand Bridge, and R. B. Winter state parks.

Union County’s economy depends on services, such as health care and education, and manufacturing of lumber and wood products. Local agricultural operations also produce field crops, vegetables and potatoes, mushrooms, fruits, and dairy, poultry, and meat products.

Other towns and communities in Union County include East Buffalo, Gregg, Hartleton, Hartley, Kelly, Mifflinburg, New Berlin, West Buffalo, and White Deer.

Major highways servicing Union County include Interstate 80 and Route 15.
